MKFC Teacher Training on the go for Somaliland

2008-04-11 by

Emma and Mohamed
Emma Hedlund, educating tutor, and Mohamed Xarbi, tutor and communicator, are excited after the start up of a complete Teacher Training End-to-End eLearning™ education in Somaliland

After some time of preparation 13 teachers at Al-Baraka Elementary Intermediate and Secondary Schools in Somaliland now attend the MKFC Teacher Training education

It all started when a friend of Mohamed Xarbi, a long time experienced teacher at MKFC, heard about the interest of finding schools for End-to-End eLearning™ activities.

–My friend visited a school in Somaliland and their management became interested in the MKFC offer, says Xarbi. After some meetings with Al-Baraka's representatives in Stockholm we decided to start a cooperation.

If all works well the school is interested in further education, first of all ICDL – the International Computer Driving License.

Al-Baraka school

The Al-Baraka school in Hargeysa comprises around 620 children of which 30% are girls

The Teacher Training course, which is founded on the British curriculum, has been packaged for online studies by Emma and Kalle Hedlund at MKFC.

–It's a quite comprehensive education lasting for three years and a half, says Emma, tutor at the course. And it will give the 13 teachers very good common teacher qualifications. Most of the teachers have long experience at the school and are well educated, but there is a great value in getting a common platform in method and pedagogics.

While Emma is the formal tutor of the course, responsible for course content and eductional tutoring, Xarbi plays the role of a communicator and supporter in technical matters.

–I am pushing the students and I inform and explain things. Simultaneously I do some support in course administration on the learning platform, says Xarbi.

Then, are there any problems when performing the course?

–The lack of computers and a slow Internet connection at the school may cause some waiting, says Xarbi, but we have sent the course materials on CD-roms, so they can do most of the job without any connection.

The End-to-End eLearning™ concept offers different channels for managing a course despite modest technical equipment. Also, the standard of equipment as well as connections will certainly improve, it's surely just a matter of time.

At MKFC we are looking forward to the ongoing e-learning communication with teachers and students at the Al-Baraka schools. And we wish you Good Luck with your e-learning!

The 70 dollar computer

There are more and more interesting projects with cheap computers.

NComputing has a different solution than One Laptop Per Child.

“NComputing enables organizations to harness the untapped power of existing PCs so that everyone can affordably access computing”.

Computer World writes about this.

“Most recently, the country of Macedonia announced plans (PDF format) to serve all 420,000 of its K-12 students using a combination of PCs running Ubuntu Linux and NComputing's PC-sharing devices, which turn each computer into a mini-server that can be shared with up to 30 students in a single classroom…

NComputing claims that it can provide computer access -- whether for Windows XP, Linux or even Mac boxes -- for as little as $70 per student…"

That’s some interesting facts about hardware, if you want to know more about the software take our ICDL and ICDL advanced eLearning courses.
